Mark is the Farmer who looks after Knoll Farm, which is home to two special breeds of cow: British White Cattle and Red Polls. British White Cattle are a native breed of cow, with origins back to the 17th century; they are praised for dual characteristics of beef and milking ability. Red Polls were developed in the latter half of the 19th century and although they are also a dual-purpose breed, they are used mostly as beef suckler cows. Our red polls are registered with the Red Poll Cattle Society as the Somer Valley Herd.
Multiple exciting projects are currently underway at Knoll farm, the re-establishing of rare breeds such as the British White and Red Polls forming part of it. We plan to grow our herd, with both pedigrees and cross-breeds.
Regenerative: We are practicing regenerative farming with soil health at the centre. So far having put in place rotational/mob grazing, we are refreshing our grass leys with nitrogen fixing legumes, where we are drilling we are using a direct grassland drill.
Somer Valley Farms attend Midsomer Norton regularly and are soon to start Frome Boyle Cross with their pies and scotch eggs ,quiches and new range of charcuterie.
