The Truly Magnificent Seven

We’ve got seven markets left before Christmas and all of them will be bursting at the seams with festive local produce to eat and to give.

On Friday 19th December, Burnham-on-Sea will be holding a mega market in the High Street with some special guests including A&A Decorations selling unique wooden decorations, Olives n Stuff with a fantastic range of marinated olives and Bev and Sarah, creators of Burnham’s Food & Drink Festival, cooking up a storm.

Both Glastonbury and Crewkerne will be on Saturday 20th December and both will have an extra sparkle with additional gifts amongst the fresh produce and special seasonal goodies.  Glastonbury’s offerings will range from award winning cider to award winning pies, trout and honey to locally produced pasta, Bradley’s Juices to Taylor’s onion, cranberry & sage bread … and lots more.

At Crewkerne you can expect music and carols from the Crewkerne Crewners Choir, tempting mince pies, Christmas puddings and cakes, and warmed apple juice and cider.  Dorset Shell Fish will have crab boxes and crab cakes though lobsters do need to be ordered in advance.  The Little Nursery will be back with handmade fresh and dried wreaths, table displays, and hyacinth baskets and pots.

On Sunday 21st there will be markets at both Axbridge and Yeovil.  Axbridge will have about 30 stalls with everything from traditional mince pies to hot chai syrup and wreaths and table decorations to mulled wine salami. And all of this with the Christmas tree, the Axbridge singers and the opportunity to take part in a prize draw to win a hamper of farmers’ market food.

Special guests at Yeovil will be Pieminister, the legendary Bristol pie makers, Mill Farm Catering, offering hot dishes, and Jurassic Fish with fish cakes hot on the day. Cottage Game will have partridges and pheasants or whole haunches of venison as an alternative to turkey, while Love my Cakes will be bringing rich Christmas fruitcakes and zesty orange mince pies.

Frome Market Christmas Special is on Tuesday 23rd December from 5pm to 7.30pm, timed so you can come straight from work and still have plenty of leeway to shop and browse the 30 or so stalls.  It’s also a great social event and the café will be open to keep you refreshed and fed amongst the shopping.  Come and get everything you need for the festive season from the turkey (ordering advised) to streaky bacon, chipolatas, hams, mince pies … and Mrs Collin’s famous Brussel sprout trees.

Wells Market on Christmas Eve will provide an ideal opportunity to get fresh produce before the big day, as well as last minute stocking fillers such as handmade chocolates or mulled wine salami from Somerset Charcuterie.  Special larger items such as Beech Ridge Farm’s slow grown turkeys, larger joints of beef from Brown Cow, special game birds from G M Country Sports or nitrate free gammon hams from Ellises Farm need to be ordered in advance.  Otherwise come early to find a full range of fresh produce including Portbridge Farm vegetables, Mere Fish Farm’s spring fed trout products, Ellises’ streaky bacon and chipolatas, and the 2014 World Champion Cheese, Bath Blue.

The new 2015 venue postcards with next year’s dates will be available at all of the markets, courtesy of our sponsors Mogers Drewett solicitors.
